New Nexus 6 2015 UK release date, price & specification rumours

Google’s gearing up to ready a new Nexus 6, made by Huawei, later this month – and it’s just dropped the price of its old Nexus 6 to make room for it. Here we round up the rumours surrounding the new Nexus 6 UK release date, price and specification. Also see: New Nexus 5 2015.

In October 2014 Google announced its Nexus 6 phone. It was expected to go on sale in November, but it was actually getting on for Christmas before stock was available. Also see:Nexus 6 review.

People were desperate to get their hands on the new Nexus 6, despite the fact it was possibly Google’s most unexciting phone launched yet. Sure, it had the brand-new Lollipop OS and some powerful hardware inside, but for many customers the 5.96in Quad HD display was simply too big, while the £499 price no longer offered such brilliant value as did the previous Nexus 5 and Nexus 4. (Update 10 September: Just this week Google has dropped the price of its Nexus 6 from £499 to £369, most likely in an effort to shift stock before it announces its successor.)

Google noticed the difference in its Q1 2015 earnings call, too. While takings were up 23 percent YOY from Google Play, revenue was down 3 percent compared to the previous quarter, and the Nexus 6 hadn’t been nearly as successful as previous Nexus devices. It’s possible that the 2014 Google phone was simply priced too high to garner the same kind of mass appeal as did the Nexus 4 and Nexus 5.

And those phones really were killer Google phones, with the Nexus 4 announced in 2012 with an unbelieveably low SIM-free price of £239, and in October 2013 the Nexus 5 followed that tradition with unrivalled value for money at £299.

For months people have speculated over which route Google would take next: the high-end phone with a big screen and high price tag, or a more compact design with decent but modest specifications and a much lower price tag.

However, rather than it being a case of whether the new Nexus phone for 2015 will be a Nexus 5 or a Nexus 6, and whether it will be made by LG or Huawei, it’s becoming increasingly apparent that Google has two new phones lined up for 2015. On this page you can read rumours surrounding a Huawei Nexus 6; see New Nexus 5 UK release date, price and specification rumours for details on the forthcoming LG Nexus 5.

The leaked specifications we’ve seen so far seem to suggest that this Huawei-made Nexus 6 will be the higher-specification, dearer phone of the pair. But both LG and Huawei are known for undercutting their rivals on price, without sacrificing on specification. We could be about to see two fantastic new phones from Google, with little to differentiate between the pair other than the size of their screen.

New Nexus 6 UK release date and price: When is the new Nexus 6 coming out?

During the Google I/O 2015 keynote we got our first glimpse of Android 6.0 Marshmallow, the operating system that will run on the new Nexus phones. At the keynote Google failed to mention any new Nexus handsets or tablets, but it’s already possible to install Android 6.0on the existing Nexus 6.

Android M includes a number of important and interesting changes to the operating system, including a mobile payments system, USB Type-C support and what Google calls ‘more intuitive’ app permissions. Android M will launch globally in the Autumn, and the developer release suggests that the Nexus 6 will get it straight out of the box.

Following tradition, we expect to see the new Nexus 6 launch as the device on which Google showcases the final version of its new Android operating system. This means we’ll, like last year, see the Nexus 6 around the middle of October, with the phone going on sale in November. Indeed @evleaks says they will go on sale in Q4 of this year.

Update 10 September: Earlier this week Google dropped the price of its Nexus 6 from £499 to £369, most likely in an effort to shift stock before it announces its successor. With a full £130 off the RRP, the new Nexus 6 must be coming very soon.

Update 8 September: Talk Android reports that Google will unveil the new Nexus phones on 29 September, and they will be available to pre-order just two weeks later on 13 October!

In terms of pricing, until we know the exact specification, we can merely speculate. The Nexus line is known for its value, and we really can’t see Google taking prices any higher than its £499 Nexus 6. Much more likely, given the findings of its Q1 2015 earnings call, is that it will return to its previous tack: high-end devices with mid-range prices.

The fact it’s in talks with Huawei is very interesting. Huawei is a Chinese manufacturer that makes devices with specs to rival the big brands such as Apple and Samsung, but at significantly lower prices. It’s one of the better-known Chinese phone makers in the UK, and in the first quarter of this year in China itself it was second only to Xiaomi in terms of market share. Both are more popular over there than Apple and Samsung, with Xiaomi taking 14 percent of the market and Huawei 11 percent, according to IHS Technology.

If Huawei is to build the next Nexus phone, we could see the price fall right back down to around £300- to £350. However, if Huawei is in charge, we’re really hoping availability won’t become an issue once again: the P8 and P8 max should have gone on sale in the UK on 15 April, but it’s still impossible to find the P8 max on sale; likewise, pricing and availability for the Huawei Watch, announced at March’s MWC, became available only at September’s IFA.

New Nexus 6 specification and feature rumours: What to expect from the new Nexus 6

Huawei has been confirmed as the manufacturing partner on the new Nexus 6. A source toldIBT that the P8 maker is working ‘in close partnership with Google’ on the smartphone.

With Huawei holding a press conference at September’s IFA 2015, many people speculated that we might see a glimpse of the forthcoming Nexus 6 during the Huawei keynote. Unfortunately, the company told us about the Mate S and Huawei Watch only. That probably shouldn’t have some as a surprise – the Nexus 6 is Google’s thing.

Various sources have leaked specifications for the new Nexus 6, and all seem to have the following in common: the Huawei Nexus 6 will feature a 5.7in Quad HD screen, a metal body with USB Type-C and a rear-mounted fingerprint scanner.

Some other rumours, as we’ll see below, suggest there will also be a Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor, front-facing stereo speakers, a 21Mp camera and support for wireless charging. That would make for a very high-end phone – and one we’re hoping will follow Huawei’s usual pricing pattern (high-end specs with a mid-range price).

According to @Onleaks, the Huawei Nexus will have a 5.7in screen and dimensions of 159.4×78.3×6.6/8.5mm. The Nexus 6 will have a metal body, USB Type-C, front facing speakers and a fingerprint scanner on the back.

GizmoChina reports that the Huawei Nexus 6’s specs have leaked online. It lists no sources, so we’re taking them with a pinch of salt, but they do seem to go along with other reports. Apparently the new Nexus 6 will have a 5.7in WQHD AMOLED screen, a metal unibody chassis, a 21Mp rear camera and wireless charging.

Prolific leaker @evleaks also says the Huawei Nexus will feature a 5.7in screen with a Quad HD resolution, a metal body and a fingerprint scanner, but adds a Snapdragon 820 processor to that list. He says it will ship in Q4 of this year, which supports our own theories.

New Nexus 6 video

uSwitch has revealed exclusive new renders of the Huawei Nexus 6, sourced by OnLeaks, which shows it to have the same rear fingerprint scanner as the Nexus 5. Check out the new Nexus 6 in its video below.

However, our first sighting of what could be the new Nexus 6 came from Google’s own promo video for Project Fi. It’s clearly not a Nexus 6, despite the fact that is the only available handset that works with Project Fi right now, so could it be a Huawei-made Nexus phone? Check out the video below.

During its Google I/O keynote back in June Google announced that Android 6.0 Marshmallow would get USB Type-C support built-in, and we were shown a mystery device. This could have been our very first look at the new Nexus 6.

New Nexus 5 with USB Type-C?

Photos purporting to be of the Nexus 6 have surfaced on a Google+ post and show the front and back of a phone. The rear shot shows a pronounced black panel which houses the camera and flash and below it is a microphone. There’s a circular fingerprint reader below that, similar to the location of the square reader on Huawei’s Mate 7 phablet. The image of the front seems to be the same handset as the colour of the metal unibody matches. The screen is off, disappointingly, but there could be front-facing stereo speakers. Unless, that is, Huawei has made only the bottom grille a loudspeaker and the top one an earpiece for phonecalls.
